Mike Sumner - U.S. Marine and Bareback Bronc Rider
I am a former U.S. Marine. I served with 2nd Battalion 7th Marines as a combat assault man in a combined anti armor team from 2003 to 2007. I was stationed at MCAGCC (Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center) Twenty Nine Palms California and did two tours to Iraq. In 2004, on my first tour to Iraq, I was hit by a land mine on Father's Day. It sucked for both me and my dad. I elected to stay in county with my unit and after 2 months of recovery I was able to return to duty. I received a Purple Heart on that deployment. On my next deployment back to Iraq I received a combat meritorious promotion. That is a little about my stand in the U.S. Marines.
I am a bareback bronc rider from Farmington, Illinois. I have been a member of the International Pro Rodeo Association, since 2007, and the Missouri Rodeo Cowboys Association, since 2016, along
with several other associations in the past.
I have been a member of Warriors And Rodeo since 2016. I have qualified for the International Finals Rodeo 3 times now. I am the 2014 IPRA Central Region bareback riding champion. I am a 2X Big Hat Rodeo Series bareback riding champion, and also a 2X Six Shooter Rodeo Series bareback riding champion.
My most memorable rodeo moment was that first time riding at IFR44 in Oklahoma City in 2014 which was my very first IFR qualification.
It was the sweet reward of countless hours on the road and in the gym. There is nothing like benefiting from hard work and dedication.
I am a new member to Warriors and Rodeo and have already met several great people that truly care about one another. This is a great, positive organization and I'm proud to be a part of it.
